Abstract: The article deals with the issue of acquiring reading skills, i.e. cross-curricular skills attained at the first stage of education, then perfected and tested during the subsequent levels. Referring to what is written in the current Core Curriculum, as well as to the theoretical foundations of reading comprehension, the author, on the basis of the volume of The Great Book, makes an attempt to evaluate one of many publication series present on the Polish market, meant to aid attaining reading skills. The analysis of the lexis, phraseology, syntax of stories for debuting readies, and also of the texts of games and activities intended for Polish language practice allows attempting to assess the series not only in terms of how valuable they are in acquiring reading skills, but also for linguistic education.
