Abstrakt: The book is the first interpretative study in the Polish writings devoted to the lyrics by Zdzisław Stroiński who, together with Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński, Tadeusz Gajcy and Andrzej Trzebiński, is considered to be the main representative of the war generation (1939–1945). The author paid attention to his nine early poems and interprets them in the categories ofa lyrical cycle, proving that a conscious dialogue was conducted both with the Polish patriotic poetry after 1795 and poems by his peers (mainly with Tadeusz Gajcy). The main hypothesis of the study is an assumption that the tragedy of the generation was presented in Stroiński’s cycle with a strong power and more clearly than in works by other year 1920 writers. The author of the book shows in particular analyses that the very cycle of poems constitutes an evidence of confronting patriotic ideals of the past with the cruelty of war reality, the expression of a dominating awareness of loneliness and betrayal, as well as a belief in the necessity of making a choice on one’s own responsibility in the situation of a helpless battle for maintaining the national being.
