Między wierszami : jedenaście miniatur krytycznych

Abstract

Między wierszami… [“Reading between the lines”] is a collection of the interpretations of eleven poems by 20th-century Polish poets whose main theme is associated both with the problems of death and grief, as well as the desire, which overcomes fear, to find one’s way in the new area of experience. A feeling of loss and deprivation is presented in the works of writers who represent various generations and lyrical orientations: Władysław Sebyła, Władysław Szlengel, Czesław Miłosz, Czesław Bednarczyk, Zofia Bohdanowiczowa, Adam Czerniawski, Florian Śmieja, Stanisław Grochowiak, Edward Stachura and Ryszard Milczewski-Bruno. In his critical miniatures the author of the book attempts to bring out the uniqueness of the poetic image, its idiolectal dimension, as well as the lyricalness contained in the rhetorical formulae. Although the poems which were chosen for interpretation have different chronologies and were written by writers who were frequently alien to one another, the thing that they do share is the awareness that in the transitoriness of things there lurks a profound sense, which may be brought into focus only by the art of poetry.
