Abstract

The article Mum’s back. A Finnish project by Markus Majaluom in Polish home is a suggestion to rethink the category of “otherness” with relation to the books by the Finnish Markus Majaluom’s addressed to younger children, present at the Polish publishing market. Foreign elements are represented not only by culinary or customary features of the Finnish culture but above all by the family model depicted in these books, represented by the mum’s back which symbolizes her permanent absence in a day-to-day struggle of the Różyczkowie family. Confronting “mum’s back” with the role played in the Moomin stories by the Moominmamma draws attention to the ironic overtone of the device used by Majaluom and to the critical energy inscribed in it.
