| Abstract: | The author traces the history of the word rozmowa (conversation). What has to be explained is not only the moiphonemic irregularity o : a, but also the role of the prefix roz- in the whole family. What meaning does the morpheme carry? The analysis leads to the conclusion that the original meaning of rozmówić was ‘to consider something by saying’. The function of roz- was similar to that found in rozkruszyć, roztluc, where the prefix denotes dividing a thing into pieces. This sense is no longer found in the verb rozmawiać. |
