dc.description.abstractTh e text embraces 1989, a historic year for Poland, as a caesura. It is so due to the changes that occurred in television as an institution and in the linguistic methodologies that were applied to television as a material for study. Th e year 1992 saw the emergence of the fi rst competitive commercial TV station – Polsat, and 1997 – TVN. In the breakthrough year of 1989 the last synthetic volume devoted to the language used in television was published. Th e three volumes which constituted a synthesis of the language used in television applied structuralist, Neogrammarian, statistical methodology as well as lexical semantics and sociolinguistics. Aft er 1989 no synthetic works about the language used in television were published. One uses in reference to this material the procedures associated with stylistics, functional stylistics, interactive stylistics, lapsology, textual linguistics, linguistic genology, rhetorics and pragmalinguistics. Th e article also refers this caesura to two breakthroughs in the humanities. One of them – the linguistic turn – occurred before 1989; the second one – the iconic turn – occurred aft er 1989. A chapter in the analytical part of the work includes a discussion of the particular problems in the two periods that are studied. Th ese problems include: television genres, news broadcasts, weather reports, sports reports and dialogue-based broadcasts. Th is involves especially the events which in television occurred aft er 1989 i.e. the segmentation of the television stream and the reduction of the mass-oriented approach of television that have to do with the expansion of the autothematic and autopromotional nature of television.pl_PL
