Abstract

The article, written in the form of an essay, is an attempt to reflect on the concept of wisdom through references to the idea of knowledge and, in more general terms, to the nature of our beliefs. The text offers a brief discussion of the historical dimension of “the discourse of wisdom” (including the Cartesian breakthrough and the English essayist tradition). A special emphasis is put on the way the idea of wisdom can be reconciled with a mild version of philosophical skepticism.
