Abstract: The goal of the paper is to differentiate between the actual and the potential semiosis in the literary work. The potential semiosis, in the objective sense, is contained within the work irrespective of its actual apprehension by the reader, and is „discovered” in the process of reading (in the act of actual semiosis). The semiotic system not only inhabits the so called social consciousness, but is also present in the texts , of culture, where it exists and can be discovered due to the phenomenon of de-semiosis. The enrichment of the system (e.g., by a new text) may result in the enrichment of the potential semiosis in the already closed text: the ,,life” of the work derives from the „life” of the system. There is a basic ontic difference between the sign as voice and the sign as trace — the latter achieves borrowed intentionality, autonomous with respect to the subject, and as such it may possess a creative power giving rise to paradigmatic strings of potential semiosis.
