Abstract

The official letter of application has been presented as a modem type of written texts, whose stylistic and linguistic character is shaped by a complicated pragmatic system. One of the major characteristics is the tension between the official objectivity and the subjectivity of the intentions expressed in formal letters. The author is concerned with the choices of linguistic means that writers of official letters make so that their texts will appear formal to them. The cultural category of formality is seen in the context of functional illiteracy. The tendency to make texts formal is mostly shown in the ways of presenting some of the elements of the objective reality. Formal persuasion would require reference to objective, logical, cool reasoning. Since the feeling of harm, trouble, nuisance naturally evoke emotional arguing, there is a natural tendency here towards colloquial rather than formal style. Also persuasion is connected more with direct oral communication.
