Abstract: The major objectives in this research are centred on the problem of the presence, significant for the newer Polish prose, of the spoken forms of the language in its written form. This presence is a means of renewing of the literary and written language taken into account in the development programme. In view of the decided differences in the materials of these two language forms the principle of mimesis may be understood here as a creative construction, utilising one’s own means, of the impression of a similarity between the literary language and live speech. Research has shown that the chief means of bringing about this impression is breaking with the existing conventions of writing and the written forms together with the creative utilisation of the writing matter for the construction of literary orthospeech forms. In this way the principal determinant in choice of linguistic means was taken to be the channel writing transfer — writing requirements and possibilities. Hence the proposition to call the language of dialogues the written(down) language. Also indicated is the significant influence of spoken forms on change in the type of narrative in contemporary prose.
