Abstract: The notion of mercy entails the problem of its relation to justice. It has been a subject explored by many theologians. The problem is deepened especially in the field of soteriology. The article discusses selected conceptions of God’s mercy in the scholastic presentations of the saving significance of Christ according to Anselm of Canterbury, Peter Abelard and Thomas Aquinas. Generally posed problem has been profiled by raising a question about the difficulty of coherent understanding of the mystery of merciful God (“confronted with God”) and the nature of salvific impact of mercy on human being (“confronted with human being”). Thoughts of three authors presented in this way reveal three different notions of the nature and effects of God’s mercy.
