Abstract

Superficially regarded Conrad’s The Tale is a self-contained story. However, by using a mythical formula and by emphasising the opposition between night and the fog, the author goes beyond simple literary convention and draws the reader’s attention to the broader context around it. The theme of the story is silence in the face of the overwhelming tragedy of World War I.
