Abstract

The article concerns the possibilities of using books as a stimulators for speech development with children speaking poorly. The author discusses different stages of book therapy, starting with working with pictures from a book as a special ground on which the first contact with the text is established. This makes the children ready to understand the text, which is obviously more difficult hence their retardation in speech development. The next stage is reading the book and focusing on its sound layer, which builds a relation between those elements of the real world that are well known for the children and the world created in the book. The last stage is teaching the children how to read which enables their independent and individual contact with literature. This contact will surely improve the children’s language competence and also will influence children’s self-esteem that is so important as far as retardation in development is concerned, even those relating the ability of efficient language usage.
