Abstract: In the following essay I analyze the need for proper media literacy education in the age of information. I exhibit three different forms of communication – writing, pictures and cybertext, and describe distinctions between those structures and methods by which they organize information and create culture. My research is based on film and new media theory supported by cognitive psychology studies of mass media communication and visual culture. Cyberculture requires fluent skills of man-machine communication as well as the ability to decode audiovisual data. Lack of those predispositions hampers (or in some cases even prevents) efficient participation in shaping the cyberculture.
