Abstract: A translator’s erudition and sensory perception in the process of translation are of huge importance, especially in the translation of literature (literary texts), which are normally characterized by a high degree of reality (category mimesis), such as historical novels, biographies, diaries, essays, etc. The article focuses on the translation of art essays, in which occur descriptions of existing art pieces (ekphrasis). The Slovene translations of some of Zbigniew Herbert’s travelogue art essays, included in the “Barbarian in the garden” collection, are the research material for this article.
