| Abstrakt: | The article is devoted to Montague Rhodes James’s ghost stories, which currently enjoy the status of classical representatives of the mystery and terror genre. The stories reveal James’s fascination with the past preserved in documents and artefacts as well as his perception of the relationship of the contemporary (“modern”) man towards cultural heritage. The article analyses James’s use of various types of distances and their meaning for the production of a species of humour as horror’s uneasy bed-fellow. |
