Abstract

The article is an attempt of disagreement with an opinion presented in genologic works that recognizes a song as a literary genre and points at its literary origin. The author shows a song is a type of oral culture that was exposed to the culture of a written word only for a certain time. Accusations made towards a song, concerning its triviality and shallowness result from the attempt of judging it in terms of written literature. Evolution of 20th century song is related to its balancing between demands of the culture of a written word and oral character of a song.
